Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits: This Week In Skiing (3-9 February 2014)

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Just a reminder of what skiing activities have been scheduled (https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/assiniboine-park-jackrabbits-2013-2014-schedule/) this week of 3 to 9 February 2014:

  1. Tuesday, 4 February 2014: The annual for-young-kids-only “Dash for Cash” is hosted by Seine River Ski Club at the Windsor Park Nordic Centre. Head-to-head classic sprint of either 50 or 100 metres depending on school grade. “Loser” gets a chocolate loonie. “Winner” gets a metal loonie. Most kids seem to want the chocolate. Register in person no later than 18:45 and be done by 20:00. Must see details here http://www.ccsam.ca/event/seine-river-ski-club-dash-cash before going. Make sure it hasn’t been cancelled due to cold weather before you go.
  2. Wednesday, 5 February 2014: “Wednesday Night Race #8” is hosted by Red River Nordic and Biathlon Club at the Windsor Park Nordic Centre. Must register no later than 21:00 on Tuesday.
  3. Thursday, 6 February 2014: “Fast Rabbits Thursday 7”. Starting this week (depending on interest and weather permitting), Coach Rob’s group of younger or newer skiers will also ski at Windsor Park Nordic Centre. While Coach Ihor’s group of older or more experienced skiers start at 18:30 and go longer distances, Coach Rob’s group will meet in the clubhouse fifteen minutes later at 18:45, and go for shorter distances. Please reply back to robert.mcmahon@mts.net if you think your child might be interested in skiing on Thursday evenings, and even reply back to tell me if they (or you) are not interested. I am trying to gauge interest before proceeding.
  4. Sunday, 9 February 2014: “Sunday Session (12)” at Assiniboine Park.

Also, I saw hardcopy indicating that registration for the Jackrabbit Jamboree opens on 5 February 2014. Once I can actually find a web page link for me to send to you, I will send it out.

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-02-02: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Sunday Session – Skate Technique!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

If your child typically skis with Coach Ihor or with Coach Rob then please make sure that they bring their skate skis (if they have them) today. If they don’t have skate skis, then please scrape the grip wax off of their skis (but keep the glide wax on the tips and tails). It is free technique day (typically manifested as skate skiing).

This does not apply to Coach Katherine’s and Coach Jeff’s groups. These kids should still come with grip wax on their skis.

Air temperature is still forecast to be -13 degrees Celsius with a -22 windchill at skiing time.

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-02-02: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Sunday Session Is On! Really!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Yes! We can finally ski! It will be “warm”!

Tomorrow’s session (Sunday, 2 February 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits will indeed run as and where scheduled (see https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/assiniboine-park-jackrabbits-2013-2014-schedule).

Air temperature is forecast to be -13 degrees Celsius with a -22 windchill at skiing time. It’s a veritable heat wave!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-01-30: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Thursday Night Fast Rabbits Session Cancelled!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Sigh… Sigh…

Tomorrow’s session (Thursday, 30 January 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits has been cancelled. This is Coach Ihor’s “Fast Rabbits Thursday” at Windsor Park Nordic Centre.

Air temperature is forecast to be -21 degrees Celsius with a -30 windchill at skiing time. This is predicted to be slightly colder than our official -27 degree cutoff (https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/is-it-too-cold/).

Yes, it is possible that the weather conditions might actually be nicer than what is being predicted a day in advance. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the Short Term Meteocode weather model seems to be relatively accurate this winter, so it probably won’t make a lot of difference, if I were to cancel with only a few hours notice.

On a much warmer note: Have your young skiers see (three minute video) how Canada’s Alex Harvey came first and Devon Kershaw came second in last month’s FIS Cross-Country World Cup Tour de Ski (Stage 1 of 7) race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS2qCmiNqj8) — skied in above freezing conditions!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-01-26: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Session Cancelled!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Sigh…

Tomorrow’s session (Sunday, 26 January 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits has been cancelled.

Air temperature is forecast to be -21 degrees Celsius with a -37 Celsius windchill at skiing time. This is predicted to be significantly colder than our official -27 degree Celsius cutoff (https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/is-it-too-cold/).

Also, even though Nordic X-Ventures mechanically groomed the Assiniboine Park trails late this afternoon, with winds forecast to be 50 kmh gusting to 70 kmh at skiing time on Sunday, it is likely that much of the tracks that we would try to ski in would be obliterated.

And speaking of obliterated, but on a much happier note: Have your young skiers see (three minute video) how Canada’s Alex Harvey came first at last week’s FIS Cross-Country World Cup Sprint Free race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O77LHto8vFM) — skied in 0 degree Celsius conditions!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2013-2014 Season E-Mails Now Posted to WordPress

Hmmmmm… As of 2014-09-26, if you were not a member of our club and you were looking solely at our website it would appear that the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits ski club stopped operating after 2014-01-12.  That is definitely not the case!  We skied until April 2014 and had our club wind-up in May 2014.

Like all previous ski seasons, in 2013-2014 the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits frequently communicated with its members via e-mail. (Having said that, starting in the 2013-2014 ski season some information was put on the website when the information tended to be of a static nature, in general.) So, for the benefit of future members to get a feel for how our club operates, information that was sent out via e-mail after 2014-01-12 relating to the 2013-2014 ski season is now posted to the website (as an archive).  It is the APJ coaches’ intent that all ski club information will, from now on, be posted to the website beginning with the 2014-2015 ski season.
