APJ: Club of the Year winner!

Just over a week ago, a small group from APJ attended the CCSAM awards night.  While it was a terrific night to meet a wide variety of Manitoba skiers, celebrate accomplishments, and enjoy a wonderful dinner together, it was especially exciting to hear the surprise announcement that Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits was nominated as “Club of the Year”!

Coach Ihor, who initiated our club, was once a participant, back in the day.  Said of Ihor that evening, “Here he is, 40 years later, passing along the love of cross-country skiing in Manitoba. Now that is dedication and loyalty.”

In fact, it was announced that child-skier-Ihor was part of the very first Jackrabbit ski club in Canada – and that club originated right here in Winnipeg! (see Ihor’s bio)

Now that’s something to celebrate.

APJ wind-up…

Good-bye Winter…welcome Spring!  As far as I can tell, unless you want to don water-skis, our APJ season has come to an abrupt end and we will not meet at the park today.  Enjoy the warm weather!

Anyone feel like water-skiing instead?!  This is the same location as our Cookie Sprint Off race 3 weeks ago! (Assiniboine Park – March 13, 2016)

Windsor Park Nordic Centre also closed its doors last week, saying a sudden good-bye to a great season of skiing.  (Note that there are many lost and found items at Windsor Park and you can still stop by to pick things up if you left them behind.  Please phone ahead as their opening hours are much shorter now.)

APJ will be having our annual WIND-UP POTLUCK LUNCH… Sunday April 10.  Look for upcoming posts with details of this wind-up to officially close our awesome season together.

Record-breaking numbers out for events last week

This past week has been more than exciting for our APJ group with record-breaking numbers out for two different events!

Last Thursday we had ten of our APJ skiers show up for the annual “Dash for Cash” event at Windsor Park.  (see photo page)  What a great night!  Thanks, Coach Jeff and Downtown Nordic leader, Steve Scoles, for heading that up again this year.  Thanks also to the large number of volunteers who made Dash for Cash possible.  It was not only a fun event for the kids to race for loonies (both real and chocolate), but great fun for the spectators to witness such incredible talent in these young skiers!

Then, this past Sunday we had another record number of APJ families out for our annual excursion to Falcon Ridge Ski Resort.  With balmy +8℃ temperatures, we were skiing in single layers, tank tops, t-shirts, etc… and eating our lunch outdoors.   (When was the last time you heard a complaint of being too hot during cross-country-skiing in Manitoba?!)  Of course, we had to round out the day with some tubing… and suntanning.  Thanks to everyone who showed up with smiles on for a great time together!

APJ Expedition to Falcon Lake!

Sunday! March 6!

Falcon Trails Resort at the end of the south shore road of Falcon Lake: there will be warm snow and a lot of it!  Google Falcon Trails for a map and great resort stories.

Please set up to arrive  for skiing at 11:00 am.  APJ big group ski will launch then.

There is a very satisfying cafeteria there or bring a lunch and a guitar or mandolin as this is promoted there. After lunch, strap on a helmet and have an absolute scream on a “not a lot of parental supervision required” inner tube slide, or keep skiing!

It’s a provincial park so remember to bring your park pass for the mini van.

Driving time from Assiniboine Park is 1:45,

See you there,

Coach Ihor
