“Sunday Session (10)” Sunday, 25 January 2015 Is On

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

The latest weather forecast is predicting a -11 degree Celsius air temperature, 20 kmh winds from the south, and a -20 degree windchill, for the start of tomorrow’s skiing session.

So, you guessed it:  For “Sunday Session (10)”, Sunday, 25 January 2015, meet at 13:30 on The Hummocks in the Nature Playground (same place as last Sunday).

And yes, there is plenty of skiable snow still on the ground (after this week’s “heat wave”).

Bring a reusable mug for apres ski hot chocolate (with wagon wheels), likely to be consumed in the Duck Pond Shelter.

Fast Rabbit Thursday is on for Jan 22! 6:30 pm

Hi!

Looking forward to another swift ski at Windsor with the Track Attack crew (Coach Rob and Coach Ihor).  Get ready for skate technique-no grip wax used, and a bit of volume skiing: not an intense speed but it will be a steady pace.  If you have a water bottle belt bring it along for the ride.

Meet at Windsor Nordic Centre,  6:30 pm, off the snow by 8:00, outside at the ski rack on the right side as you get out the door.  If you don’t see us right away we are probably doing a few laps of the first fairway (start area to the left of the building). I will probably not be able to be able to hear my cell phone due to the ruckus in the building or due to the the fact that I’m probably skiing!

We’ll see you there!

Ihor

“Sunday Session (9)” Sunday, 18 January 2015 Is On

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

The latest weather forecast is predicting a -14 degree Celsius air temperature, 10 kmh winds from the north, and a -20 degree windchill, for the start of tomorrow’s skiing session (https://spotwx.com/products/grib_index.php?model=meteocode&zone=r1.15&tz=-6&title=FPWG11&lat=49.89975&lon=-97.13749).

Because of this, “Sunday Session (9)”, Sunday, 11 January 2015 will indeed run, but we will meet at 13:30 on The Hummocks in the Nature Playground (same place as last Sunday), not in front of the Lyric Theatre.

Bring a reusable mug for apres ski hot chocolate (with wagon wheels), likely to be consumed in the Duck Pond Shelter.

A super Fast Rabbits Thursday! Plus a new sport drink for us!

Thanks to everyone who came out. I had an absolute hoot of a good time!

Parents: if you get this before your skiers do, please show it to them!

So, what we learned from this evening’s ski was:

  1. Push with all of the legs- this means scrunching down low to get a huge leg push
  2. Go wide with the feet (and hands) on that really steep uphill after the loony downhill at the double black diamond bit
  3. Let go of the pole at the end of the end of the arm swing: we have these great pole straps that let you let go of the pole, so let’s use that technology to our advantage!

The “new” sport drink:

Okay, it’s actually not that new.  My mom used to make this very super charged tea for cold nights when we had to bang out longer skis in Assiniboine Park after school.  This was what we did:

  • steel-lined thermos (so it wouldn’t break)
  • Mom then made a huge pot of tea
  • Mom added two really large spoons of honey
  • Then Mom squished in a lemon or  blueberry jam

This Thermos would sit in the snow trackside and we would have a drink every 2 laps (about 20 minutes).  This would keep us going for a couple of hours.  very low tech but it worked.  It’s all about the sugar, and it was warm, which really helped cold hands.

Don-Han and Josh approve  and are endorsing this drink.

See you Sunday in the park,

ALL HAIL, HUDSON! for breaking a pole,

and  Welcome Clara! Newest skier in the group!

Coach Ihor

Fast Rabbit Thursday Jan. 15: let’s use skate skis!

Hey FastRabbits, technique tonight will be free, better known as “skate” so leave the grip wax at home and come out to feel some fast snow. We will be doing some volume skiing, so nothing too stressful,

Coach Ihor

“Fast Rabbits Thursday 4”, Thursday 15 January 2015 Is On!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Coach Ihor’s and Coach Rob’s groups are invited out to the Windsor Park Nordic Centre tonight, Thursday, 15 January 2015, at 18:30 for “Fast Rabbits Thursday 4”.  Even though it has “4” in the title, don’t let that fool you:  This will be our first on-snow Thursday session this winter.

Meet Coach Ihor in the clubhouse at 18:30.  While Coach Rob is unable to attend tonight’s session, it is likely that Coach Katherine, Coach Jeff, and Soon-To-Be-Coach Yan will be in attendance to have vertical ski fun with the younger skiers.

The latest weather forecast is predicting a -17 degree Celsius air temperature with a -20 windchill at skiing time.

Technique (classic or skate) to be determined.

Daily trail pass (and hot chocolate, if required) is the skier’s responsibility to purchase in the clubhouse.

“Wednesday Night Race #4” Wednesday, 14 January 2015

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Do you have a skier in your home that would like to try out ski racing?

If yes, then this upcoming Wednesday, 14 January 2015, from 19:00 to about 20:00, at Windsor Park Nordic Centre, is the “Wednesday Night Race #5 / Schools Race #1”.  Ski technique is “free” which means your skier can do either classic technique or skate technique or both.

If you are interested:

  1. First see http://www.ccsam.ca/event/wednesday-night-race-5-schools-race-1/ for details and to register online with Zone4.  Your skier must be registered no later than 21:00 on Tuesday, 13 January 2015.
  2. Then send an e-mail to Coach Ihor (at ihor@mymts.net) to let him know that your skier(s) will be showing up this Wednesday night so that Coach Ihor will be able to coach your skier.
