2014-02-02: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Sunday Session – Skate Technique!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

If your child typically skis with Coach Ihor or with Coach Rob then please make sure that they bring their skate skis (if they have them) today. If they don’t have skate skis, then please scrape the grip wax off of their skis (but keep the glide wax on the tips and tails). It is free technique day (typically manifested as skate skiing).

This does not apply to Coach Katherine’s and Coach Jeff’s groups. These kids should still come with grip wax on their skis.

Air temperature is still forecast to be -13 degrees Celsius with a -22 windchill at skiing time.

Thanks,

Coach Rob

(on behalf of Coaches Ihor, Katherine, and Jeff)

2014-02-02: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Sunday Session Is On! Really!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Yes! We can finally ski! It will be “warm”!

Tomorrow’s session (Sunday, 2 February 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits will indeed run as and where scheduled (see https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/assiniboine-park-jackrabbits-2013-2014-schedule).

Air temperature is forecast to be -13 degrees Celsius with a -22 windchill at skiing time. It’s a veritable heat wave!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-01-30: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Thursday Night Fast Rabbits Session Cancelled!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Sigh… Sigh…

Tomorrow’s session (Thursday, 30 January 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits has been cancelled. This is Coach Ihor’s “Fast Rabbits Thursday” at Windsor Park Nordic Centre.

Air temperature is forecast to be -21 degrees Celsius with a -30 windchill at skiing time. This is predicted to be slightly colder than our official -27 degree cutoff (https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/is-it-too-cold/).

Yes, it is possible that the weather conditions might actually be nicer than what is being predicted a day in advance. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the Short Term Meteocode weather model seems to be relatively accurate this winter, so it probably won’t make a lot of difference, if I were to cancel with only a few hours notice.

On a much warmer note: Have your young skiers see (three minute video) how Canada’s Alex Harvey came first and Devon Kershaw came second in last month’s FIS Cross-Country World Cup Tour de Ski (Stage 1 of 7) race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS2qCmiNqj8) — skied in above freezing conditions!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

2014-01-26: Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Session Cancelled!

Hello Jackrabbit Managers,

Sigh…

Tomorrow’s session (Sunday, 26 January 2014) of the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits has been cancelled.

Air temperature is forecast to be -21 degrees Celsius with a -37 Celsius windchill at skiing time. This is predicted to be significantly colder than our official -27 degree Celsius cutoff (https://assiniboineparkjackrabbits.wordpress.com/is-it-too-cold/).

Also, even though Nordic X-Ventures mechanically groomed the Assiniboine Park trails late this afternoon, with winds forecast to be 50 kmh gusting to 70 kmh at skiing time on Sunday, it is likely that much of the tracks that we would try to ski in would be obliterated.

And speaking of obliterated, but on a much happier note: Have your young skiers see (three minute video) how Canada’s Alex Harvey came first at last week’s FIS Cross-Country World Cup Sprint Free race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O77LHto8vFM) — skied in 0 degree Celsius conditions!

Thanks,

Coach Rob

(on behalf of Coaches Ihor, Katherine, and Jeff)

2013-2014 Season E-Mails Now Posted to WordPress

Hmmmmm… As of 2014-09-26, if you were not a member of our club and you were looking solely at our website it would appear that the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits ski club stopped operating after 2014-01-12.  That is definitely not the case!  We skied until April 2014 and had our club wind-up in May 2014.

Like all previous ski seasons, in 2013-2014 the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits frequently communicated with its members via e-mail. (Having said that, starting in the 2013-2014 ski season some information was put on the website when the information tended to be of a static nature, in general.) So, for the benefit of future members to get a feel for how our club operates, information that was sent out via e-mail after 2014-01-12 relating to the 2013-2014 ski season is now posted to the website (as an archive).  It is the APJ coaches’ intent that all ski club information will, from now on, be posted to the website beginning with the 2014-2015 ski season.

Change of Venue for Sunday, 12 January 2014

The Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits will indeed meet at 13:30 today, Sunday, 12 January 2014, but not in Assiniboine Park.

Instead, we will be skiing at Fort Whyte Alive.  Meet at the Fort Whyte Alive Interpretive Centre at 13:30.

Admission for everyone is free today because Fort Whyte Alive is hosting the“5th Annual Snow Trek:  Winter in Motion”.  Free admission.  Free cross-country ski rentals.  Free cross-country ski lessons (I believe I was told).  For anyone.

Fort Whyte Alive indicates, “5th Annual SnowTrek”, “Celebrate Winter in Motion! Try cross-country skiing and we’ll provide the equipment, free of charge. Explore the frozen forest on guided snowshoe hikes or skate on our frozen lakes.  Warm up with hot chocolate by the campfire.  Sunday, January 12, 10 am – 4 pm.”

Team APJ Wants You! Candy Cane Classic Relay Race (This Wednesday)!

Like to classic ski? With a candy cane? Wearing “seasonal” attire? On a team?

If you answered “yes”, then the Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits would “reindeerly” love for your child (and/or you) to join us this upcoming Wednesday, 18 December 2013, at 19:30, at the Windsor Park Nordic Centre, to be part of one (or more!) Team APJ squads “racing” in the “Candy Cane Classic – Wednesday Night Race #3”.

Here are some important points regarding this event as posted at http://www.ccsam.ca/candy-cane-classic-wednesday-night-race-3:

  • We hope to see you … for our Candy Cane Classic. It promises to be lots of fun. We will provide hot chocolate, candy canes and LED lights for all to wear during the race.
  • The big kids will be skiing 3 x 1.2 km and the smaller kids will be skiing 3 x 800m.
  • Come dressed in seasonal attire and we will subtract 15 seconds from your team time. If the entire team has dressed for the occasion we will deduct an additional 15 seconds for team spirit. Yup, that’s right, up to one minute off if all members are dressed in seasonal attire… Santa hat, reindeer antlers, Christmas tree, snowman, etc.
  • The hand off baton will be a candy cane. If your candy cane travels the entire course without breaking, we will subtract an additional 60 seconds from your time.
  • Teams will be posted by Tuesday night so an early registration is greatly appreciated. Please tell others about registering earlier.

Update for Dec. 14, 2013, Weather Suits and Klister video

HI All!

Well, let’s start with the uniforms:  we’ve set the deadline for suit orders to Monday Dec. 16 to allow us to get the suits here next month. If you are interested in getting one of these very versatile ski suits, please go here first, then go to the Podiumwear storefront website https://www.podiumwear.com/team-storefront/HMbbbbbbc/ and type in the password  APJ2013.  As requested, adult size toques have been added to the list.

NO APJ Session this Sunday December 15th (however):

Due to the extreme weather, tomorrow’s APJ session is cancelled.  However, I along with a few other parents and skiers will be skiing at the Duck Pond at 1:30 tomorrow. Please feel free to come out and brave the cold.  If you want, please bring your own thermos of hot chocolate for your skiers to enjoy as I won’t know how many skiers to plan for.

And for something fun while you are indoors:

This link takes you to a hilarious video of Klister, the Canadian Ski Team’s mascot.  It’s really good:

Assiniboine Park Jackrabbits Registration NOW CLOSED!

Due to overwhelming response we are now full at 45 skiers and beyond that we won’t be able to have productive skier to coach ratios. Thus, we have had to close registrations (a shocking first time event!).

Thank you for your support of our club.

The APJ coaches
