APJ Day 1 is a maybe

Hey everybody!

I know that we can’t wait to go skiing. I was in the park today, and the grass was really slow, agreed to by Mark in the Park.  We really need a few more cm of snow to make it happen for a good day.  Right now it’s trying hard to snow but we won’t know until Sunday morning.

So…….

Track Attackers will meet 1:30 pm regardless, at the duck pond shelter, ready to run and train, all others (jackrabbits and bunny rabbits) please hold off coming out as it would be a not optimal experience, and we want to keep things positive!

Please contact me if you have any questions (ihor@mts.net) about Sunday,

Thanks,

Coach Ihor

Looking for ski gear?

If you’re in need of ski gear, check out our web page:  APJ’s Buy & Sell, as there are a variety of items for sale.  You can email Gina with a list of your items for sale, exchange, or looking to acquire.  (see more details on page).

Also keep in mind the annual CCSAM Swap Shop coming up on Saturday November 17 at Windsor Park Nordic Centre.  It’s a bit like a giant garage sale – with a focus on skiing.  Drop off your used gear ahead of time to sell.  Arrive early on sale day to find the best deals on skis, poles, boots, etc.  Local shops will also be there promoting/selling their products and helping to answer your questions.

APJ Calendar view repaired

Apologies if you were trying to view the APJ Google calendar for the past few weeks but could not see anything except a “busy” notice.  The tech problem is now fixed and you can take a good look at all our APJ events for this year.  (Please remember that all dates are subject to change due to weather, etc.)

Let’s get ready for that first session (Sunday November 11, 1:30pm, Duck Pond meeting place) by registering here, and dusting off the ski gear.  Woohoo! Welcome to another great season!

APJ calendar of events

This season’s APJ calendar of events is now up and running!  Visit the Google calendar on our website to view upcoming events for the year.

NOTE: All event dates are subject to change so keep up to date by “following” our website and receiving regular notices.

Let’s Go Skiing!!!!

Well, maybe a bit early, but to get registered and started, please go to the link below:

https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=19132&lan=1&cartlevel=1

PLEASE KEEP READING:

The coaches have met several times during the off season, and after sitting down and over long run discussions some bright ideas have come out!  We have quite a few skiers  that want to go to the races, many that want to go skiing without the race (strangely the race skiers are included!) so we will be looking at a lot of variety if the snow conditions allow for it.

Another thing that has come about is BIATHLON (ski and shoot).  This is a big deal and a lot of fun.  Several of our skiers and coaches have picked this up and if you are looking for a different ski experience you should give this a whirl.  Biathlon Manitoba is holding a dryland camp this coming weekend at Falcon (I know that this is short notice) but the Sunday is open for novices (Saturday is for the high performance group).  Go to  this link to register, and you will need to register with Biathlon Manitoba as an associate member to carry on, please go to the previous APJ post for that link or get in touch and we will make it happen,

https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=19077&lan=1&cartlevel=1

Otherwise, APJ’s Day 1 is Sunday Nov. 11 at the old Duck Pond! Full season schedule to follow,

Stay Fit!!!!!

Summer Biathlon, Sunday Aug. 26

Hello!

Well, Super Mom, AKA Jane, has successfully returned James and Ihor from the glaciers and swiftly reminded them of the Biathlon Day at Falcon Trails this Sunday:  Ihor and James are now logged in to run and shoot.

Just a reminder of the APJ intro to summer biathlon.  Please refer to the last post for details.

Thanks, & looking forward to the Sunday!

APJ Summer Update & Biathlon

How is the summer so far???

Several exciting things have been put into place over the summer, especially with Biathlon Manitoba (also known as BAM).  Coach Katherine has burnt a lot of time and planning in putting this together so we should make sure that we all thank her for the vision.  And how about a team canoe trip down the Assiniboine River? Go to the bottom of this posting.

Biathlon!

Many of the APJ skiers became consumed with the biathlon range during the Falcon Lake visits (did we have ulterior motives?) so here is what has been put together:

  1. APJ skiers can shoot at Gateway Gun Club on Friday nights through fall & winter.

(Gateway is a 25 m long indoor shooting range at  871 Gateway Rd. in North East Kildonan.  BAM uses this for dry land training)

Minimum age is 11, $200 per person, coaching, rifles & ammo included.
Bam membership required – go to the link below for the membership and read further into point 2 for which membership one click.

https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=17846&lan=1&cartlevel=1

Contact Brian at BAM for more info

2) BAM will put on a one-day run-shoot clinic for APJ skiers 11 years old and up (coach-sized ages included) on Sun Aug 26th at Falcon.  This is Huge!

  • Sunday Aug. 26
  • 10:30 – 3:30
  • Age range can be 11-80.
    • Morning will be shooting instruction/and shooting at the metal targets,
    • Afternoon will be run and shoot training and short team relay race.

BAM will BBQ hot dogs of various varieties, drinks. APJ parents: can we potluck out some extras… look for a potluck website link!

How do you do this?

  • Register with Bam and Biathlon Canada as Recreational athletes and as supporters (about $20.) There is a link on the Bam website: http://biathlonmanitoba.ca  or just click: BAM Membership. This  will allow them to race in the winter if they want.
  • Look around the site while you are there, lots of good stuff.

Oh Ya! BAM will provide rifles and ammo for the day.  And finally, they should send the BAM director an e-mail saying they are coming and have registered: biathlon@sportmanitoba.ca

Then come to Falcon on August 26

3) APJ goes canoeing!

How about a team paddle down the Assiniboine?  We have several canoes in our bunch.  When was the last time you paddled the Assiniboine?  All are welcome, just need to put together the APJ Armada, and a date.

We’ll see you at Falcon!

Coach Ihor

Thank you to ALL!

THANK YOU to all members of our APJ ski club!  It was a great season and, despite the strange lack of snow for most of the winter, we still skied a lot and really made the best of it.  Winnipegers are a hearty bunch!

Credit goes to all our PARENTS/CAREGIVERS!  You:

  • got your kids ready & out the door on cold Sunday afternoons!
  • opened an avenue for your kids to learn a new sport/new skills
  • had patience picking your kids up off the snow…again & again!
  • learned new skills yourselves (some as first-time skiers)

And of course a special thank you goes to our devoted COACHES!  Ihor, Jeff, Katherine, Yan, Blaine & Mhairi, Axelle & Nastassja… we so much appreciate your skills, your patience, your direction & creative coaching techniques, the energy you bring to each session, and all the time you devote to the club.

It was fun to meet once again this afternoon for our wind-up and try to recognize each another in regular clothing!  Have a safe and enjoyable summer and we look forward to seeing you again in the Fall.

– Gina
