SKI GEAR – important info from Coach Ihor

A few important notes:

  1. Some additional information on Ski Gear has been added to that section of our website.  Please read through it in its entirety.  It is crucial info for having a happy ski season with your family.
  2. There are no longer any water bottles/waist holders available through APJ.  That information has now been deleted from Marketplace.  Apologies for that oversight.

The weather has been incredible this Autumn.  I think we all really enjoyed our time together outside as families yesterday!  Here are a few photos from the end of Sunday’s session, sent in by one of the parents.  Thanks, Leslie.

LOTS OF UPDATED PAGES ON APJ!

Please take a really good look around at the pages of our website as A LOT of new content has been added this week…

  • a bunch of new photo pages are now posted in Media/Photos (some pages from last season; a page from last Sunday’s session)
  • new info in Marketplace
  • ads in the Buy & Sell
  • new Coaches pictures posted
  • a new page under the “About” menu link entitled, “Ski Gear” (more info from Coach Ihor will be added to that link soon)

And continue to check the Calendar as new events do get added to it now and then.  For example, the annual “Swap Shop” is coming up on November 21 at Windsor Park Nordic Centre.  You might get your ski gear there if you haven’t found some already.

We are meeting Sunday November 1!

Due to some confusion, this post is to clarify that the APJ Coaches would like to meet with everyone tomorrow for the first time this season.  Please attend tomorrow, Sunday November 1st, at 1:30 p.m. at the Assiniboine Park Duck Pond shelter.

It will be an important session for parents and kids alike… loads of ski season info, as well as fun and games.

Wear clothes that are weather-appropriate for this time of year (running shoes, T-shirts, hoodies, easy-to-run-around-in- pants…)

A Start To The Season!

Hi everybody,

It’s been a fabulous summer and fall, many adventures have taken place at the lake, road tripping, wolves at the lake, taking mom on an hour long really wet jet ski ride that was supposed to be only 10 minutes total (who would have known that you’d get more wet sitting on the back if went slowly): it was a great summer!

Back to the present!

Session # 1 is scheduled for Nov. 8 but could we all get together, skiers too, to go over what we are looking forward to this season and a chance to introduce ourselves to new members of the APJ team.  This way the first session on the 8th will be really easy. We will talk about:

  • What’s in your ski closet?
  • Events to look forward to this season
  • Any neat things you would like to do?
  • Some of you are looking at seeing how fast you can go so this means hitting a few races (I can provide a history of international level fast skiing trained in Assiniboine Park).
  • Jackets!
  • If you need a science project: skiing is full of them,
  • And, where do we go from here?!?!?!? Our club is developing into something bigger than I thought it would be (Rats! I guess this is a problem most people want). What are we capable of at present and what do we need to add to make it better?

Head to the Duck Pond shelter this Sunday, 1:30, be prepared to run around a bit (parents included as this is your chance to sneak in a workout), conduct an inventory of your ski bag, try some boots on to see if they still fit, even check jackets and pants in anticipation of handing them down to someone in our group.  This is our chance get ready.

To the Duck Pond!

Registration is OPEN… the calendar is up…let’s SKI!

Welcome back to another year of APJ Jackrabbits skiing!  (With it being a balmy +17℃ today I’m sure you’re in the mood for snow, right?)

Please find the registration information (and current Zone 4 link) under the drop-down tab “About“.  Remember, parents register themselves, too (for free) for insurance purposes.

Check out all the cool events the coaches have planned for us this year:   2015-16 Schedule.  For those who’d like to visually see a calendar, use the drop-down menu and view Calendar under “2015-16 Schedule”.

See you on November 1st!

Okay Track Attackers: how is the fall fitness?

Well, everyone, I imagine, is back at school and, being cross country skiers with enormous lungs and an ability and desire to go for a long time (what: are we Huskies?), that you are running this fall with your schools.  Most excellent(!) and it’s a great excuse to get out of class early on race days, no?

Running is a very efficient way of getting fit.  Running trails is also a great way to get your mind used to missing trees while you’re skiing.

So, if you haven’t signed up for school cross country, I would highly recommend it!  Any APJ Track Attacker should be able to do this with no problem!  I have the utmost faith in your huff and puff abilities.  Go run hard!

Potluck wind-up…this Sunday April 26, 2015

One last reminder that our APJ lunch wind-up is taking place on Sunday!  Click here to sign up.  (All the details are on the APJ website, front and centre.)

It’s not too late for anyone to say they’ll attend.

Join us in celebrating fun times in a great ski club and the conclusion of a good year together!

REMINDER: APJ Lunch Wind-Up… Sunday April 26, 2015

Just a friendly reminder that our APJ lunch wind-up is taking place on Sunday!   Click here to sign up.

All APJ families are invited to attend this wind-up potluck regardless of the number of times you actually made it out this winter! We won’t judge.

Tuxedo CC is available for us from 1:30PM to 3:30PM. We hope to be eating by 1:45 p.m. The location is Tuxedo Community Centre skate building (see map). It has washrooms, a kitchen, a playground, and a paved pad.

We look forward to you sharing your family’s favourite meal item(s) at our potluck. We are currently at a count of 75 people attending…which is awesome!   Please ensure each menu item you bring is substantial enough to feed ~15-20 people.

Sign up ASAP if you plan to attend this event… that way we can be better prepared.

PLEASE NOTE: One family has requested that NO tuna be included in any potluck foods as there is a serious health concern associated. Thank you in advance for your sensitivity. We ask that you indicate any extreme food allergies ahead of time (for example: if an individual will be very sick around a particular food even if they avoid contact with it).

APJ wind-up: Sunday April 26, 2015

Our APJ wind-up will be in less than 2 weeks… Sunday April 26, 2015.  It will be a potluck again – at lunch – at the Tuxedo Community Centre. (specific time-frame and details TBA)

I’ll be coordinating the food side of things.  The coaches will be managing the rest of the wind-up.

Rumour has it that the wind-up involves some fun games, awards, and other exciting stuff! (… a bit more than last year where it was a simple potluck. Let’s hope the pouring rain holds off this year.)

So… “mark your calendars” with Sunday April 26, 2015.

You will receive the sign-up information via an email from me associated with the website, “PerfectPotluck.com”.  So be prepared to sign up for bringing a luncheon item when that email gets to you.  Thanks.

Hope to see all of you there!

“SnowKidz Cross-Country Cross 2015″ (Now Cancelled!)

https://i1.wp.com/snowkidz.com/en/service/Find_an_event/Canada/Assiniboine_Park/css/daten/snowkidz/snowkidz.png

Sorry, kids.

“SnowKidz Cross-Country Cross 2015″, originally scheduled from 13:30 to 16:00 on Sunday, 22 March 2015, to be held in Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, has now been cancelled.

This free event has been cancelled due to a really, really, really bad case of “grass-itis”.  It may be months before Mother Nature recovers from this serious snow deficiency.

Here is what the SnowKidz Cross-Country Cross 2015 venue looked like at T-Minus- One-Week-To-SnowKidz-Cross-Country-Cross-2015:

It’s one week to the day before the SnowKidz Cross-Country Cross 2015 is to be held and almost all of the snow has melted (weeks before normal).

“Mother Nature: Ptooie!”

By 2015-03-15, nine of the last ten days has seen air temperatures well above 0 degrees Celsius. The last two days have been +13 and +14 degrees Celsius.
Exactly one week before the proposed event, solar irradiance makes it feel like +21 degrees Celsius in the sun (and +15 degrees Celsius in the shade).
Normal maximum temperature is -1 degree Celsius with a normal minimum temperature of -11 degrees Celsius on 15 March.
